When a stray boy suddenly appears on his porch, the sanctuary Severus built for himself after the war begins to unravel—invaded not only by the child, but by memories he thought he’d buried and a duty he never wished to claim.
Green-eyed, silent, and wounded by magic he cannot yet control, the boy leaves Severus no choice but to help him—and in doing so, forces him to confront the past he tried to forget.
And somewhere between silence and healing, Severus has to wonder:
Is the boy a ghost of what was—or a glimpse of what might still be?
Or
How Severus ended up being the go-to adult for a time-travelling past-version of the brat Potter.

Severus Snape and the Art of War by CypressWand
After his death, Severus makes the decision to return to the world of the living, starting in the summer of 1975. With his adult knowledge on the upcoming war hidden inside his 15 year old body, he finds his way back to Lily, and his new position in the wizarding world.

Harry’s always been known as The Boy Who Lived. Only Severus knows that this is a lie. (Or: a portrait of Severus Snape, in seven acts.)
Sirius desperately wants to punch Snape right in his stupid mouth. Just once. He’s pretty sure it will make him feel better.
All the Dark Places by dirty_muggle
Hermione always dreamed of working at the Ministry of Magic and making a difference in the magical world. But several years after the war’s end, her dream career has become a meaningless slog, and her personal life isn’t much better.
Severus survived the war and was acquitted of a permanent stay in Azkaban, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t in prison. Reviled by magical Britain, Severus lives alone, friendless and jobless except for one small, shady contract.
Desperate for something different, Hermione heads impulsively to Knockturn Alley, where a newspaper and a chance encounter with a stranger open her eyes to sex work. It isn’t long until she’s heading to Knockturn’s brothel, The Scarlet Witch, with ideas of undertaking a drastic change. Along the way she runs into Severus, who’s taken to reading in pubs to try and make his life feel less pathetic—when he can get out of bed. Angry at the world that’s rejected them, they form a close friendship. But when the magical world begins weighing in on Hermione’s new career and their friendship leads to feelings, they start to wonder: are people like them allowed happiness and love, or is the best they can hope for a half-life lived alone in the shadows of the world?
A/N: There are some heavy themes in this story, especially around mental health and sex work stigma. Please check the tags for content warnings. An extra warning that in some cases, I’ve chosen to use words related to sex work that are problematic or offensive because I felt like they’re authentic for the characters, their level of ignorance/understanding, and the time period (2003).

Severus Snape, from first curse to first kill. Or: The making of a Death Eater.
Eight-year-old Severus Snape wakes up alone at home only to be later dumped in another house. There, he must put up with an annoying toddler, a creepy cat and two adults that cannot be trusted.
The place is Godric’s Hollow and the year, 1981 —except for the fact that Severus thinks it is 1968.
So Lonely Without Me by Caligryphy
“You’re up first.”
“Am I…?” Severus Snape finally glances up from the yellowed edges of the Daily Prophet. He has read it six times, cover to cover, including the advertisements. There are seven spelling mistakes in the culture section. He has marked each one with a ring of red ink. Each time he sees the crossword, he laments having finished it the first day.
Potter nods and takes the newspaper. “It’s ready when you are.” The younger man sinks into the armchair after Severus rises. It is the only chair in the room. Potter usually lies on the bed or stretches on the floor, bare toes wriggling.
Contempt by danpuff
Harry hates Snape, and he always will. (He will, won’t he?)
After missing several Order meetings, Severus reappears 13 days later, injured and trapped Occluding. Sirius is tasked with Healing the man.
Sirius was not expecting himself to question his views about his childhood enemy, let alone fall for him. Severus does not make it easy for him. He vows to rescue Severus from the Occlumency induced wall he can’t escape from by himself, sparking off a relationship that ends up saving Sirius from his own prisons at high price for Severus.
A story that centralizes on Order work if Severus was no longer able to be a spy.
Severus had always known that he would die in a painful, most horrifying way ever since back when he was almost beaten to death by his father, then mauled by a werewolf, then thrashed around by a maniac overlord. His miserable, luckless life only seemed to lead to that one day when he would be struck down by a bloody snake, of all things.
Bleeding out in front of Harry Potter was just the last humiliation Lady Destiny had in store for him.
Suddenly staring into Potter senior’s eyes again while being levicorpused was just the icing on the cake.
Severus Snape has traded what might be one of his last peaceful summers for a tumultuous few months housing the Boy Who Lived after Hogwarts’ student registry notified him of a potential abuse case at Number Four Privet Drive. If that wasn’t bad enough, he finds himself revealing far more than he ever should have—and far more than Albus Dumbledore ever would have allowed—to the boy about his past, and his mother. When Sirius Black reveals himself with the intent of saving his godson from Snape, the three of them end up standing begrudgingly together to find Peter Pettigrew and clear Black’s name before the proper authorities can be involved.
Harry finds solace in the unexpected care of an unjustly convicted man and an ex-death eater; meanwhile Black grapples with repressed attraction to the man he’d spent his childhood tormenting.

After the castle opens a new reading nook for her, Hermione frequently finds herself offering to share both the space and her books with Severus Snape, a rather inconvenient development in light of her growing attraction to the cranky potions master.
As Severus takes care of Harry he starts to look back on his own childhood. Memories he rarely revisits resurfaces. There were similarities with their past, but also endless differences. He slowly notices how he differs from his parents and his past.

When he’d left his old life in the rearview, he’d told himself that he would live by the sea. And so he’d packed up what he wanted to keep and sold the rest, picking up his entire life and moving across the Atlantic, where nobody knew or cared about the name Severus Snape.

Severus didn’t want to admit it, but waking after the war to find himself two-dimensional—with no life-endangering missions, duplicity, or outlets for his self-hatred—was… rather boring. At first.

He couldn’t understand why the man insisted on bringing the potion to him personally each night. At first, he had written it off as some kind of power play; a message that while Remus wasn’t welcome in his space, Severus was more than comfortable to invade his.
